Rag the Viking!

Posted on : 12-01-2009 | By : Tom | In : News, minicomics

Steve and I are happy to announce our first minicomic title. Say hello to Rag the Viking! Rag is about Karl Ragnarsson, a descendant of Norse heroes, who dreams of the drama and excitement of his viking heritage while living the hum drum life of a local city planner.

Rag is a collaborative effort by Steve and I. Steve had the original idea and the original sketch. I took his idea and rewrote it into a minicomic script. Then Steve helped me out with the initial sketches of Rag, and I based the other characters on that style. So the character sketches and script are mostly done. It will be up to me to actually produce the minicomic.

Rag will be 8-12 pages of fun minicomic goodness, at a size of 5.5″ x 4.25″. It will be available for purchase and digital download hopefully by the end of the year. We’ll update you with some teaser panels when they are available!

No moss grows under your feet, does it? Holey schmoley!

I got inspired – and lucky yesterday with Rag. I sat down and in 10 minutes I had this drawing. A few tweaks, a little help from you – badaboom! A cover!

congrats for the invention of a new comic!
funny that he’s wearing some sort of skirt while he’s swinging a cruel axe:D
…good luck with this one

Thanks Nixon!

Hmm, cubicles at Valhalla?
Are they made from spears?
Are the office chairs made from breastplates?
Ceiling grids with shields?

Although vikings didn’t have horns on their helms, they did have skirts or dresses (long gambesons (FR) or våpentrøyer (NO)), but chain mails also reached the knee.
So in my opinion it’s a pretty authentic illustration.

Thanks Sardtok! We weren’t go for perfect authenticity, but I wanted to be in the ballpark. I mean he’s got to have horns on his helmet right? :)

thx for clearing the skirt thing up sardtok:)..
i won’t doubt that, real scotsman wear some sort of skirt too..however i liked that detail…it just kinda fits the character so well with the legs and stuff..it just looks cool:D

He wouldn’t be easily identifiable as a Viking without the horns!

Peter Madsen used horned helmets in his Valhalla comics.
They’re good comics, but it seems they’ve never been translated to English.
You could have a look at a few pages at the artist’s website: http://www.petermadsen.info/pages/vh/valhalla-eng.html
Since it’s about the Norse gods, and not Vikings per se, there aren’t a lot of Vikings in them, but book 10 does have a couple of them in the preview.

Very nice stuff. I saw that when I was looking for fonts for the cover. He has a nice style.

When I was designing the Viking warriors for Civ IV, many of the more history-accurate fans weighed in at our forum, reminding me that Vikings didn’t have horns.

The game designer, Soren Johnson, instructed me thus: Print the legend, not the man. ie, if most people thought Vikings had horns on their helmets, that’s what you do.

So I did. And so we do. :)

[...] you see the teaser cover of the Rag the Viking minicomic I’m doing over at Wishtales. [...]

Tom, I cant wait to buy the Mini Comic! The stuff you and Steve have been doing is very inspirational : ) keep it up!

Thanks Matt! We’ll be posting some process stuff so stay tuned :)
